Specimen Requirement: Minimum 300 µL Spinal Fluid.
For specimens referred through LRC, only tests ordered will be performed.
Specimen Handling Instructions:
Freeze and ship frozen on dry ice.
**Turnaround time - 24 hours, Monday to Friday excluding STAT holidays. STAT requests will be phoned and faxed ASAP.
Critical Value: HSV-1, HSV-2 or VZV DNA detected.
Turnaround Time: 24 hours on receipt at testing site**
Additional Information: Specimens will be routinely tested for enterovirus in addition to herpes viruses (see Enterovirus PCR). Spinal fluid on children under 5 will be additionally tested for Parechovirus.
